British businesses are on alert after the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSS) warned of a possible Russian cyber-attack following the Salisbury nerve agent affair.

NCSS has been advising businesses and public sector companies to ramp up their cyber security efforts as relations between the UK and Russia begin to deteriorate.

The Times reported that electricity, gas and water firms, nuclear power plants, government departments and the NHS have all been warned to prepare for a state-sponsored attack.

NCSS also released its first guidance for small charities earlier this month.

The advertising industry will be watching the developments carefully in the wake of the attack on WPP’s global systems in June last year. The network was subject to a wave of crashing IT functions and ransom demands for 24 hours.

RT, the Kremlin-controlled TV station, was served a warning from Ofcom that inferred it could be taken off air“should the UK investigating authorities determine that there was an unlawful use of force by the Russian state against the UK”.
