The UK's home secretary will call on social media firms to clampdown on gang-related content following a spate of deadly attacks in London.

Amber Rudd is expected to urge the platforms to make it more explicit that violent gang material, including music and video, is forbidden from their sites, according to ITV News.

Rudd will make the appeal on Monday as she outlines wide-ranging measures to tackle serious violence including a ministerial consultation on extending stop and search powers.

Plans for the strategy were announced in October but have been accelerated following a wave of mostly knife-related recent violence which has led to more than 50 people being killed in London since the start of 2018.

Last week the Met Police commissioner Cressida Dick called out social media platforms for escalating youngsters' feuds.

She told The Times: “There’s definitely something about the impact of social media in terms of people being able to go from slightly angry with each other to ‘fight’ very quickly.

“It makes [violence] faster, it makes it harder for people to cool down. I’m sure it does rev people up.”
