To protest against the bill to ban alcohol in New South Wales (NSW), the alcohol lobby has claimed that there is no evidence to suggest that advertising influences Australians to drink more.

Even sporting bodies like Netball Australia, Cricket Australia and Tennis Australia are protesting the NSW bill as they believe it will negatively affect the sports economics.

However, in favour of the bill are College for Emergency Medicine, the Australian Medical Association, the Cancer Council and the NSW and ACT Alcohol Policy Alliance.

According to ABS data which was released at the start of September, alcohol consumption in Australia is on the rise with an average Aussie consuming five beers, a bottle of wine, three mixed drinks and half a cider per week.

As reported by Guardian, executive director of Alcohol Beverages Australia, Fergus Taylor said: “The point that I make is that these relationships, and links, and associations that you will hear about do not represent a causal relationship. Once you appreciate that the advertising that you are seeking to ban is not causing the problem that you are trying to solve, it becomes a moot point.”
