Facebook can allegedly face $1.63 bn in fine from the European Union (EU) privacy watchdog for data breaches, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Facebook's lead privacy regulator in Europe, Ireland's Data Protection Commission, has asked Facebook to submit more details in the incident where Facebook confirmed that almost 50 million of its user accounts have been compromised following a hacker attack on its network earlier this week (25 September).

The news comes after Cambridge Analytica scandal which revealed the information of up to 87m Facebook user had been passed onto the political data firm without consent, saw a number of advertisers halt their spend with the platform.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said: "While I'm glad we found this, fixed the vulnerability, and secured the accounts that may be at risk, the reality is we need to continue developing new tools to prevent this from happening in the first place."
