As video games become diluted with repetitive online grinds and predatorial lootboxes, studio Bethesda has enlisted Lynda Carter, the original Wonder Woman, to underline its commitment to rich single player experiences.
With an ad shot in the style of a heart-wrenching PSA, the company positions itself as a champion of gamers who still cherish single player experiences and the incumbent narrative and characterisation perks they bring.
Carter makes a reference to her past as the DC Comics hero by calling herself “a really wonderful woman”. The ad aired during The Game Awards to an audience of a reported 4 million viewers.
In a statement, Bethesda said: “Single-player narrative-driven experiences have been at the heart of gaming for decades, but recently – as multiplayer games continue to grow in popularity and prominence – many in the media and community have expressed concern about the future of triple-A single-player games.”
Accompanying the drive, Bethesda will donate $100,000 to the Entertainment Software Association Foundation, an organisation that provides scholarships to the next generation of developers.
