Duracell and Wieden+Kennedy New York have teamed up for another holiday iteration of the battery maker’s ‘Trust is Power’ campaign, and this year, Santa is a suburban dad who sees things going wrong at home if he doesn’t get Duracell batteries.
Duracell, like last season, once again imagines a world where chaos ensues without the most trusted battery. Only this time, Santa is the main character, and he's just like us.
When he's not in his North Pole workshop, he's out in his minivan buying Christmas gifts, or in his house, with his wife and kids.
He's got the same holiday anxieties we all do, like getting his kid’s favorite nearly-sold-out toys in time, keeping his teenage daughter happy and making sure Christmas morning runs smoothly.
In ‘Night Before Christmas’, directed by Ulf Johansson and running on broadcast and digital channels, a thinner-looking Santa with hipster curly hair is stuffing stockings in his average suburban home. He pictures what it would be like if he didn’t use trusted Duracell batteries in the toys for his kids, and the results are not good – an angry teen daughter not able to play her electric keyboard, a young son being disappointed in a remote controlled dinosaur that dies, and a wife tripping over said dino.
A second spot, 'Battery Aisle', running online and in social, finds Santa at the North Pole Mart, getting Duracell batteries, then competing with big guys and angry elves for toys, and eventually getting a lighted sweater as he carts his two youngest kids through the store.
