T Brand Studio, the advertising company inside The New York Times, has hired Ben James as its first head of creative.
James last served as chief creative officer of J Walter Thompson New York, leading the agency's creative departments in New York and its creative teams across North America.
At T Brand, he will oversee the creative, editorial and design teams. He officially joins on 13 May.
Amber Guild, president of T Brand, said the content studio was looking for someone who believed in the Times'"journalistic approach" to working with brands and had experience developing and leading myriad creative teams.
At JWT (now Wunderman Thompson), James led projects including 'The Fin,' a campaign with Northwell Health to improve the quality of life for amputees.
James spent nearly seven years at JWT and held the title of chief creative for over a year. Before joining JWT, he was an agent and creative director at Creative Artists Agency in Los Angeles.
