Trash in the oceans is a massive global issue, with islands of trash gathering in the seas and washing up on some of the world’s formerly most beautiful beaches. To try and combat the problem, many brands and agencies are calling attention to the issue, including the Cannes Lions-winning Trash Isles.
Mexican beer brand Corona is making its own effort to bring attention to the issue by blocking off one of Brazil’s most famous beaches.
When surfers and beachgoers got to Ipanema Beach, in Rio de Janeiro, they were met with a wall of trash. The sign in front of the wall said: "One day, the trash left on the beach will stop you from getting into it."
Measuring 15 meters of length by two meters of height, the wall was built with plastic trash removed from only three days of garbage left on the beach of Ipanema. It was artistically designed, with sea-blue plastic dominating the center, while the rest mixed in like sea glass.
The effort aims to draw attention to the fight against maritime pollution caused by plastic in the oceans. According to Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the World Economic Forum, by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the sea.
The stunt, created by agency Soko in a partnership with Mutato, is part of global a deal between Corona and NGO Parley Of The Oceans that aims to protect the sea from plastic garbage.
