Pizza Hut will give away free pizza to its rewards members if a touchdown is scored within the first 14 seconds of the Super Bowl.
The pizza chain is partnering with former NFL wide receiver Devin Hester for the promo, who currently holds the record for fastest touchdown in Super Bowl history: in 2007, the Chicago Bears player scored a touchdown within the first 14 seconds of the game.
If an Eagles or Patriots player is able to break the record during this year’s game on Feb. 4, Pizza Hut will give out a free two-topping medium pizza to members of its Hut Rewards loyalty program, which the chain launched last year. The hope is that the stunt will raise awareness of the program, which lets members who order online or via mobile trade points for pies.
The likelihood that Pizza Hut will actually have to dish out free pizzas to members is slim, as the chain points out in a press release that there have only been 15 touchdowns returned in the first 14 seconds of a game - including regular season and playoffs - since 2011. On the off chance it happens, Hut Rewards members will be able to redeem their free pizza between Feb. 8 and Feb. 11.
According to the company, Pizza Hut anticipates selling more than two million pizzas during the Super Bowl this year.
